Designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to become a basketball official. Chris Miller, Vice president and Rules interpreter from the Maryland Basketball Officials Association’s (MBOA) will provide training in a variety of areas necessary to become an official including referee signals, fouls, violations, court etiquette, professionalism, bench decorum, and much more. At the conclusion of this course, participants will have sufficient knowledge to pass the National Federation of High School test, which is required to become a certified referee in the state of Maryland. Age 18+ may officiate at the Youth and High School level (NFHS). Age 16 & 17 may officiate at the youth level only. A rule book, whistle and lanyard are provided on first day of class. Participants must attend every class. Refunds will not be issued due to classes missed or failing the NFHS test. *Additional MBOA organizational dues and proper officials uniform required prior to officiating games. All classroom sessions will be at Thomas Stone High School located at 3785 Leonardtown Rd, Waldorf, MD 20601. Classes will be from 630pm-830pm. The class will take place in the media center. For the classroom sessions, we will cover the official rules of basketball. We will also cover court positioning and the mechanics/signals of the game. The class will also go over the official's attire: what to wear, where to purchase, and other equipment needs, along with much much more. We will provide you with NFHS rules books, case books, an officials manual, a whistle, and a lanyard. We will also have pamphlets, quizzes, and video plays to assist in the learning process.

The court sessions will be at Maurice J. McDonough High School, located at 7165 Marshall Corner Rd. Pomfret MD 20675. The times for those will be 6pm-8pm. For the on-court sessions, you will be refereeing live high school workouts. Please wear comfortable jogging/running shoes, shorts/sweat or joggers, and a shirt. Please bring your whistles and lanyards. We will have other veteran referees there to help guide and position you into the correct spots on the floor.
